There’s something about the Permian Fieldhouse that suits the eye of Lubbock Coronado’s Jannae-Leigh Cooper.
Cooper and fellow senior Kya Smith each scored 19 points to lead the Lady Mustangs to a 68-29 victory against Permian in a nondistrict girls basketball game Tuesday.
Jazlyn Braithwaite added 10 points for Lubbock Coronado (3-1), which held a nine-point lead after one quarter and blew the game open in the second quarter.
Permian’s Kimora Pierce scored 13 points to lead the Lady Panthers (2-2).
It was Cooper’s second time on the Lady Panthers’ home court, the other coming two years ago when she had a breakout game of 33 points as a sophomore.
“She’s really talented and for whatever reason, she really plays well here at Permian,” Lubbock Coronado coach Ashley James said. “She’s a great player and she’s really worked on her shot, so she’s developed into a pretty deadly 3-pointer shooter for us; and she’s a great rebounder, too.
“Our seniors, they seem to have a different focus about them.”
Permian stayed close to the midway point of the first quarter, trailing 7-4 after Pierce went baseline to baseline for a layup.
Lubbock Coronado, however, went on a 7-2 run to close out the first quarter for a 15-6 lead.
Then Cooper got involved.
Scoring 14 points in the second quarter, along with rebounding and playing solid defense, she led the Lady Mustangs to a 40-9 halftime lead, with the Lady Panthers finally scoring with 1:19 remaining in the first half when Emelia Skinner hit a 3-pointer from the right corner.
