COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Scott’s two-run single helps Odessa College stay alive in national tournament

YUMA, ARIZ. Madi Scott drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift No. 5 Odessa College past No. 1 Florida Southwestern State College, 2-1, at the NCJAA Division I Softball Championship Thursday at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex.

Scott’s one-out single drove in Lauren Gonzales and Kawehi Ili to advance the Lady Wranglers (56-5) to the championship bracket final at 2 p.m. Friday against McLennan Community College.

McLennan advanced after defeating Paris Junior College 11-3 in six innings Thursday.

Odessa College was held to one hit until the seventh inning, with starter Aydenne Brown holding the Lady Bucs to just two hits through six innings.

Florida Southwestern was able to manufacture a run in the top of the seventh inning with a hit batter, sacrifice bunt and back-to-back walks loading the bases before a sacrifice fly by Laura Vigna drove in the game’s first run.

The Lady Wranglers responded immediately with Gonzales singling to lead off the bottom of the inning, followed by a single from Ili. Both runners moved up one base on Morgan Dutton’s sacrifice bunt, bringing Scott to the plate.

She laced a 2-2 pitch to center field, easily scoring Gonzales before Ili raced around with the winning run when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
