COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Baseball, softball teams all in action

HOME OPENER

The Odessa College baseball team opens its home schedule with a nonconference doubleheader against Seward County Community College on Friday at Wrangler Field.

First pitch is scheduled for noon.

The Wranglers (3-3) will host Dallas College-Richland in a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.

Odessa College also will retire the jersey of former baseball coach Rick Zimmerman in a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Zimmerman coached the Wranglers from 1990-2004, winning 521 games and guiding the 1995 team to a third-place finish at the NJCAA JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

TOUGH TEST

The UTPB baseball team opens a four-game series against Angelo State University with a 3 p.m. game Friday at Foster Field in San Angelo.

The Lone Star Conference rivals will play a doubleheader Saturday before closing out the series with a single game Sunday.

The Falcons (3-5 overall, 3-5 in conference) rallied for a 5-4 extra-inning victory against Lubbock Christian on Sunday, scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and then once in the 10th to win.

CONFERENCE OPENER

The UTPB softball team travels to face Cameron University to open Lone Star Conference play at 3 p.m. Friday in Lawton, Okla.

The Falcons (2-6) went 1-3 at the Lubbock Collegiate Sports Invitational last week at Lubbock Christian University.

Emily Andress leads the team with .444 batting average.

Stephanie Jimenez has hit four home runs, while Aracely Araiza has 11 RBIs to lead the team.

ANOTHER TOURNAMENT

The Odessa College softball team is back on the road for the Cisco College Invite in Brownwood.

The Lady Wranglers will face McCook Community College at 1:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a game against Navarro College at 4 p.m.

They will face Western Oklahoma State College at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a game against Temple College at 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Wranglers cap their weekend with a home doubleheader against Western Nebraska Community College at 11 a.m. Sunday at Wrangler Field.

Odessa College (8-3) is coming off sweep of its games at the Permian Basin Invitational, having defeated North Central Texas College, Barton Community College and Otero College last week.
