COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Wranglers keep focus in runaway

It was a game that could have gotten very ragged given the scoreboard.

Odessa College men’s basketball coach Kris Baumann wouldn’t allow that to happen.

With the third-ranked Wranglers dominating visiting New Mexico Military Institute from the outset, Baumann paced the sideline as he normally would, constantly changing the lineup and forcing his players to keep their heads in the game.

The result was an 87-58 blowout by Odessa College against the Broncos in Western Junior College Athletic Conference action Thursday at the OC Sports Center.

Kiree Huie scored a game-high 13 points off the bench to lead the Wranglers (17-1 overall, 4-0 in conference) as they won their 28th consecutive WJCAC contest.

Anthony Marshall and Darrel Armstrong Jr each added 11 points to the victory, with Dontrell Hewlett chipping in 10.

Brandon Maclin led the team with six rebounds

“I thought Maclin played very well for us tonight,” Baumann said. “This was the kind of game where players can kind of get loose and I needed them to focus because we have four very important games coming up.

Odessa College will travel to face Midland College on Monday, the first of four games in eight days.

The gauntlet includes games against Frank Phillips on Jan. 26, South Plains on Jan. 28 and Howard College on Jan. 30.

The Wranglers will be on the road, and television (ESPN3) the final two games of the stretch.

Yanis Ndjonga scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for New Mexico Military Institute (8-11, 1-4).
