COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Odessa College’s strong second half seals victory

The Odessa College men’s basketball team has some work to do.

Playing its first home game this season, the Wranglers ran away to an easy 81-55 victory against Utah State Eastern on Friday at the OC Sports Center.

It wasn’t quite that simple, however, as Odessa College head coach Kris Baumann pointed out afterwards.

“We had too many turnovers in the first half and I thought some of our (mistakes) were unforced,” he said. “Now their zone will do that to people early in the season, get you out of sorts.

“I thought we played better in the second half. That’s a good team over there; they just beat the No. 2 team in the country.”

Dontrell Hewlett led the fifth-ranked Wranglers (7-1) with a game-high 16 points.

Anthony Marshall added 14 points and a game-high five assists. Khalil Haywood had a game-high seven rebounds.

Odessa College saw 13 of its 14 players score.

“I was happy,” Baumann said. “Just looking at the stats, I thought Rome (Marshall) made some baskets and I thought Dontrell Hewlett was outstanding.

“He just played really, really well. I thought his energy was very good; he was really good in our press.”

Gbenga Olubi had 12 points to lead Utah State Eastern, with Dyson Lighthall adding 11 and Kevin Bethel 10 in the loss.

The Wranglers will face Cochise College at 4 p.m. Saturday in their second game of the tournament.

Josh Nwankwo and Logan McLaughlin each had 14 points for New Mexico JC, with Cameron Kimble adding 12 and Jeremiah Cherry 11 in the loss.
