COLLEGE BASEBALL: Wranglers continue hot streak with sweep of New Mexico Military Institute

Scheduled to a play a doubleheader consisting of a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning game, the Odessa College and New Mexico Military Institute baseball teams flipped the script.

Then, they added bonus baseball in the opener.

Either way, the outcome was the same.

Odessa College scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the first game, 13-12, and then added a 14-10 victory in the second contert to complete a four-game sweep of the Broncos Friday at Wrangler Field.

The Wranglers have won eight in a row and improved to 29-16 overall, 15-9 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play.

They swept the Broncos in a pair of run-rule victories during Thursday’s play, winning 17-o and 10-0.

Odessa College outscored New Mexico Military Institute 54-21 in the series.

“It was a tough day to put up zeroes,” Odessa College coach Kurtis Lay said. “I think in the second game we had one zero and they had one zero.

“Outside of that, we were fortunate in both games to get the big inning. With the wind blowing out to right the way it was, you knew it was going to have an effect.”

Tyson Pointer was the offensive leader for the Wranglers, finishing the doubleheader 5 of 10 with nine RBIs, a double, triple and two home runs.

On the day, the Wranglers pounded out 31 hits, including five doubles, three triples and two home runs.

The Broncos also had their hitting shoes on, finishing with 21 hits, including four doubles and six home runs.

Odessa High got a huge relief effort from Cadon Everett in Game 2. Everett came on with no outs in the second and went the rest of the way to earn the victory.

“That was a big, big-time outing by Cadon,” Lay said. “We didn’t get the zeros that we were quite hoping to get, but outside of the four spot, he never really gave up any big innings.

“He threw strikes and was able to throw more than one pitch for a strike. So he gave us a chance.”

The Odessa College pitchers matched the offense in the first game, striking out 13 and then hit that number again in the second contest, including all three outs in the top of the seventh inning.

The big innings for the Wranglers came in the third inning in Game 1 and then the fourth in Game 2.

In the first game, Odessa College sent 13 hitters to the plate, with Pointer’s three-run homer and Tucker Gideon’s opposite-field double off the left-centerfield wall the big hits as the Wranglers scored eight runs.

The second game saw 11 Odessa College hitters go to the plate, with Pointer, who had hit has other three-run home run in the first inning, added another RBI with a double to center field.
