COLLEGE BASEBALL: UTPB rallies to earn split against Newman

The UTPB baseball team split a doubleheader with Newman University, losing the first game 5-2 before earning 2-1 victory in the second game Sunday at Roden Field.

The Falcons (2-9) held a two-run lead in the first game before Newman scored four times in the fourth inning to take control. UTPB’s Matt Symczak (1-1) suffered the loss, with Alex Rivera giving up one run in relief.

In Game 2, UTPB pushed across solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the split, with Owen Bessette (1-1) earning the victory in relief of starter Ivan Thomas, who allowed one run in five innings of work.
