LETTER TO THE EDITOR: This area needs ice sports

I have to bring this to everyone’s attention, but our community and children are being lost by the community, city, county, and every other leader of the community.

We have had Ice sports in the area for 26 years now. And the community, 26 years ago fought hard to get them here. Now, we are losing them, and every child that has a passion for them or a desire to be the next Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Scott Hamilton, Katarina Witt, or any other great icon in the sports.

We have been trying, with no help, to find a place to put a new ice rink for our children and the community. Unfortunately, The mayor, city council, former county Judge, county commissioners say they want to help and believe this is important but have been unwilling to commit or OK a piece of land that will allow for us to build a new rink.

We have even proposed several areas or places that could make it work but they repeatedly drag their feet and will not OK or work towards securing a piece of property that would be suitable for this to be accomplished. We have even tried to contact other leaders in the community like Mr. Bushman who also will not respond or help.

We should be about community, community pride, Quality of Life and developing future young adults that will help lead this area into the future. How is this possible if they see the current leadership unwilling to step up and set an example as the right thing to do? The ice sports community has been working diligently to get a plan together that makes sense for the community and the children but without the help of the rest of the community, the interest and futures’ of our children are being put on the back burner. Every other sport, that I can think of, has facilities they can play on, practice on, and enjoy except ice sports.

The only time that is available is when the Jackalopes are allowed to have ice in the coliseum. I am asking the rest of the community to please help the kids and convince the leadership of our area to commit to helping the future leaders of this area.
