LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Mask mandates are not the way to go

Referring to David Newman’s letter in the 1/13/22 Odessa American, he makes it plain, as he has in all his letters, that he is a flaming liberal.

In this letter, he advocates for a mask mandate for the ECISD schools, ignoring the fact that here are fewer cases of COVID among children and teenagers, than among the general population.

Also, ignoring the fact that the survival rate for COVID is approximately 99.4%. As the CDC admitted last week, about 75% of the deaths classed as being from COVID, were actually due to those people having as many as four comorbidities, such as obesity, diabetes, emphysema, etc.

Many psychologists have stated that masking children is harmful to them socially, mentally, and even physically. They’re already about a year behind due to having to do school remotely in too many cases, so why do further harm to them by making them mask up for the whole school day?

Mr. Newman also totally ignores the fact that the government has absolutely NO authority, either under the law or the Constitution, to require that anyone wear a mask, or get vaccinated. The government has no authority to demand that people take any kind of medicine, for any reason. That is personal choice. Masks should be the same way.

People, or I should say, sheeple, like Mr. Newman are one of the real threats to Democracy, as the Democrats are fond of saying, because they are willing to sacrifice their personal freedoms and liberties on the altar of making themselves feel good. Our Constitutional rights supercede the sheeples’ wish to feel like they are being socially and politically correct.

I will absolutely not give up my rights just to make you feel good!
