LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Left is wrong on the issue of guns

By Sandy Milner

I am writing today in reply to Rev. Barry Abraham Zaveh’s letter of April 1, in which he called gun owners, gun rights supporters, and 2nd Amendment supporters “irrational” and “childish”.

He is obviously one of the bleeding-heart liberals who don’t believe anyone should own guns, and doesn’t think that the 2nd Amendment confers an individual right to own guns. He says “we are exposing our ignorance by resisting any “reasonable” restrictions on guns.

Well, all he has done is expose his own ignorance about the purpose and intent of the 2nd Amendment. The 2nd Amendment was not included in the Bill of Rights so that people could hunt or shoot targets. The Framers of the Constitution and Bill of Rights were very specific about the purpose of the 2nd Amendment. They knew that the people might, at any time, need their own personal weapons to resist invasions from other countries, and especially to protect themselves from our own government trying to become a dictatorship.

If Rev. Zaveh actually believes that our government would allow us to be free, if we the people weren’t armed to the teeth, then he is extremely naïve. Already, the 1st Amendment is under increasingly frequent attacks by the loony leftwings. The 2nd Amendment has been under attack for decades by idiots who can’t seem to understand that the phrase “the people” in the 2nd Amendment means the same as when it is used in any of the other Amendments. The far left tries to make the case that the 2nd Amendment only applies to the National Guard. But, anyone who has read the Federalist Papers, or read any of George Mason’s, or Thomas Jefferson’s comments about private citizens being armed, and who has a lick of common sense, can see that the Fathers of our country meant for all individuals to have the right to bear their own privately-owned arms. Thomas Jefferson said, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” George Mason said, “The surest, and most effective way to enslave a people, is to first disarm them.” George Mason also said, “I ask you , sir, who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people.” Patrick Henry said, “The great objective is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able should have a gun.” I guarantee you, that if the 2nd Amendment is ever lost, it won’t be long before all the other Amendments and their rights are done away with, also.

Now, I don’t know what Rev. Zaveh’s IQ is, but I will stake my money that the authors of the Constitution were smarter than he is.

He also mentions that we should be willing to accept “reasonable” restrictions on our right to bear arms. Well, in the first place, if restrictions or conditions can be placed on a right, then it is not a right. It is a privilege. Privileges can be taken away; rights cannot! Also, who is going to decide what is “reasonable”? I doubt that Rev. Zaveh would want me, as a 2nd Amendment supporter and a gun owner, telling him what is “reasonable”. And, I damn sure don’t want him, as an anti-gun, left-wing liberal, telling me what is “reasonable”. The government has no business telling anyone what is reasonable. That is for the people to decide.

And, finally, the bottom line is that any gun laws, restrictions, bans, or anything else will not stop someone from killing someone else, if they have decided they are going to do so. The only thing gun laws, bans, etc, accomplish is to take guns away from people who are honest and who are not going to commit a gun crime in the first place. As I have said many times, the crooks are not going to obey gun laws, or any laws, anyway. That is why they are criminals.
