LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Can we learn nothing from history?

In today’s OA, January 6th, there was another article about the ongoing drama in the Ector County Republican Party leadership. They should really consider making a daytime soap opera out it.

What a fiasco, but today is also both famous and infamous in American History. In 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt delivered his famous Four Freedoms Speech: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.

This was given as the world was being engulfed in war that the United States would be drawn into eleven months later after Pearl Harbor. 400,000 Americans would give their lives to preserve and protect these freedoms.

I wonder how they would feel if they were alive today? How do we, the inheritors of their sacrifice, feel about these freedoms? Thing about it, WOKE speech? Religious bigotry and Antisemitism? Homelessness and Hunger? Fear of Safety at the Border? Lack of Respect in the World?

Eighty years later, in 2021, the infamous occurred; the storming of our capitol to try to overturn the presidential election. While it has been determined that no fraud occurred, there has never been an explanation of how some states changed the rules for voting without going through due process. Regardless, the storming of the capitol was a disgrace. Now we spend more time wanting to impeach someone rather than trying to govern.

When did being an American get replaced by being either a Democrat or a Republican? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. My prayer is for someone to step up with a common sense plan that we can all get behind before it is too late.
