Crafting Traditional Bows

Photos of former Ector County ISD teacher and coach Joe Hernandez crafting a recurve bow made of osage orange wood Monday at his workshop on 6th Street. Joe said alot of Native American traditional bows were recurve bows. Hernandez traditional bow making allowed him the opportunity to craft an Apache replica bow and primitive arrows. Those replicas are on display at the Marfa and Presidio County Museum. Monday was the first celebration for Indigenous Peoples’ Day which is a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. President Joe Biden became the first U.S. President to formally recognize the holiday by signing a presidential proclamation declaring October 11 to be a national holiday on October 8, 2021.
