UTPB has partnered with the Permian Strategic Partnership and Scharbauer Foundation to cover tuition and mandatory fees for graduate students majoring in Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and School Counseling. The goal of the Behavioral Health Scholarship program is to grow the next generation of behavioral and mental health providers in the Permian Basin!
UTPB student Cynthia Warren is a part of the program. She plans to graduate in May with a Masters in Clinical Psychology.
Completing the master’s program has been what Warren describes as a lifelong dream come true. She feels she couldn’t have asked for a better experience at UTPB.
“I was a little nervous and unsure when I started the graduate program, but a sense of belonging and connection quickly replaced those feelings. The professors have been compassionate and invested in my success,” said Warren.
Warren’s five-year goal includes becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate. She hopes to then open her own practice to continue working with families.
“Psychology has always been in my heart; from psychopathology to counseling, I have always been drawn to the field. Since junior high, I have wanted to be a counselor; UTPB has helped me reach my dream,” said Warren.
Warren says the scholarship funding helps students avoid accumulating debt while pursuing their dreams.
“My time at UTPB is ending, but the students and professors I have met and connected with will last a lifetime in my heart. I am genuinely sad to leave behind such a close-knit university and program!” said Warren.
Daniel Jurado is a first-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology master’s program. He expects to graduate by 2027.
“Students are able to engage with others of various backgrounds. I am also able to conduct research outside of my regular classes with the support of my mentor,” said Jurado.
Post-graduation Jurado wants to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Psychological Associate, before eventually continuing his education towards a PhD.
“I see many detriments in availability of services for those with minimal resources in the area and would like to be a part of the development towards addressing that concern,” said Jurado.
Jurado says the scholarship funding has provided him with financial support and removed some stresses surrounding every day expenses.
“As many students at the master’s level already have families and work full-time jobs, the additional financial support to cover their tuition allows for more time to focus on their studies and required course material,” said Jurado.
