The Permian Basin Mission Center is ready to talk turkey.

The nonprofit organization is gearing up for the holidays by preparing for its annual Thanksgiving Box giveaway. This year, the organization plans on giving out 400 boxes to those in need, Executive Director Hank Herrick said.

“The Permian Basin Mission Center has a long-standing tradition of providing clients in need with a free 12-pound turkey and a complete box of food weighing about 30 pounds,” Herrick said.

Items in the box usually include a traditional Thanksgiving meal such as stuffing, cranberries, and sweet potatoes, Herrick added.

Registration for the boxes will begin at 8 a.m. until noon, and then from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., on Nov. 7 through Nov. 9. Residents will need to bring a valid photo ID as well as a current utility bill or lease agreement showing proof of residence. Turkey boxes are limited to one per household, and registration will happen on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Families who register will be issued a ticket, Assistant Director Cecilia Baldwin said, adding the ticket is needed to pick up boxes, scheduled for 8 a.m. until noon on Nov. 17.

“If they don’t have that ticket, they won’t be able to pick up their box,” Baldwin said.

Founded in 1998, the Permian Basin Mission Center also provides food, clothing, rent and utility assistance to those in need. Herrick said the organization was able to assist more than 28,000 people in 2022.

“We are a Christian-centric Mission that attempts to help people in our community,” Herrick said. “The turkey box is just the cherry on the top of what we do on a week-to-week basis.”
