A 4-year-old student at Lamar Early Education Center on Monday suffered a medical emergency at school and was transported to the hospital where he passed away.
Through a spokeswoman, Odessa Police Chief Mike Gerke said the OPD is investigating the death in partnership with the Ector County ISD police. That is all the police are releasing at this time.
“We are devastated,” Ector County ISD Superintendent Scott Muri said in a news release. “The loss of a child creates unimaginable pain. Our trauma team was at Lamar yesterday to support the staff, students and families who need a counselor to talk with. That trauma team will remain at the school for as long as they are needed. The entire ECISD team extends our deepest condolences to the student’s family.”
The Urias family has started a GoFundMe page for baby Ezekiel with the goal of raising $15,000.
The post says the family is devastated to share the heartbreaking news of the sudden loss of “our beloved baby Ezekiel.” It says he passed away while taking a nap.
“Ezekiel was a bright light in our lives filled with joy, laughter and an infectious energy that touched everyone he met. His love for his Woody dolls and playful antics with his siblings brought endless smiles to our faces,” the post details.
“As we try to navigate this unimaginable loss, we are reaching out for support from our community. Any contribution, big or small, towards Ezekiel’s funeral expenses would mean the world to us. Your generosity will help alleviate the financial strain during this incredibly difficult time and allow us to give Ezekiel the farewell he deserves,” it adds.
Deputy Ector County Medical Examiner Carl Rogers said an autopsy will be conducted April 10 in Lubbock. He said it would be six weeks minimum before results are known. It could event take eight to 10 weeks.
