Two die in separate Permian Basin wrecks

A 79-year-old Seagraves woman and a 50-year-old California man have died in recent days in separate Permian Basin wrecks.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Brian Alejandro Armendariz, 21, of Loop, was driving north on U.S. 62 in a GMC Sierra when he entered the southbound lanes near the Seagraves city limits around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Armendariz then struck a Toyota Rav 4 being driven by Patricia Aspelund Wingo.

Wingo, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was taken to Brownfield Regional Medical Center where she died as a result of her injuries.

Armendariz was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter and booked into the Gaines County jail, according to DPS.

At around 10 a.m. Monday, Donald Edward Simmons Jr., of Stockton, Calif., was driving a Ford Expedition on Interstate Highway 20 when a tire blew, causing the vehicle to go off the roadway into the north barrow ditch and roll, according to DPS.

Simmons, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the Ford and pronounced dead at Ward Memorial Hospital. A 55-year-old Stockton, Calif., woman, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated at Ward County Hospital and released.
