Francisca Medrano loves everything about her job as a member of Ector County ISD’s School Nutrition staff.

She was recently rewarded for her dedication with the School Nutrition Employee of the Year award.

Now stationed at Blackshear Elementary School, Medrano has been with ECISD for 19 years. She has been at Austin Montessori and Odessa High School and worked in Mexico.

“The kitchen is my passion,” Medrano said. “… I love my job.”

Getting the award was a big surprise to her and important to her because she works very hard at her job and is glad to be recognized for it.

When she was called to the office to receive the award, Medrano didn’t know what it was about and thought it could be a schedule change or any number of things.

But she was shocked when she realized it was for the School Nutrition Employee of the Year honor.

Zulema Palomino is Medrano’s manager at Blackshear. “I was proud of her. She’s doing really good,” Palomino said.

Including herself, Palomino said she has 11 employees at Blackshear.

They have one kitchen.

“We serve three schools. We serve Milam, Blackshear and Carver,” she said.

Medrano said she still cooks at home, even though she cooks at work. Her favorite dish to make is green enchiladas.

“I think that’s everybody’s,” Palomino said.
