SAMARITAN CENTER: The new self

By Yvette Rodriguez, MA, LPC

Although frequently associated with ghost, goblins, witches, and the like, Halloween is also called All Hallows Eve, a day to remember and to celebrate lost loved ones. The following day is Day of Dead or All Souls Day, a continued celebration of honoring the dead.

During Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the old self must die for the new self to emerge. This is done through the utilization of bilateral stimulation.

Destruction of the old self is crucial to the healing of the mind. Once the old self is destroyed the new self can begin to emerge by honoring and thanking the old self for its protection during distressing or traumatic events.

EMDR can help individuals heal and move forward from distressing past events and cause a rebirth of the self.
