Retired attorney, jurist writes Odessa-inspired children’s books

Former Odessa lawyer and retired District Judge Robert May has written a new book, “The Scary Storm with Big Bunny & Little Bunny.”

He previously wrote The Bobtail Chronicles in the 1980s and they are poised to be reissued, as well.

The new one is “off to a good start. My last count was well past 100 books sold from March 1 to April 1,” May said in an email.

“The Bobtail Chronicles are a little behind because they were released earlier. However, I am just now preparing to emphasize all three for Easter.

All three books are available online at Amazon Books, Barnes & Noble, Walmart and other online outlets in eBook, paperback, and the new book comes out in an exceptionally nice hardcover edition. People can also go to my website authorbobmay.com,” he wrote.

All three books are written so that both children and adults can enjoy discussing the issues that arise in the stories, May said.

“They are fully illustrated by me, and they are a cross between a morality tale and a tall tale.

I am gratified that my original Odessa inspired books are still loved by kids today. I was prompted to republish them because my wife’s sister, who read them to her adult children when they were young, rediscovered them in a closet and read them to her grandchildren who loved them as much as her kids did years ago. I wrote the first one to my young son who now is in his 40s, and I wrote my new book while pushing my granddaughter down her street where at times we would see bunnies,” May said.

May worked for Walter Wilson right out of law school in 1976. May was sworn into the State Bar by the late C.V. Milburn, who was a District Judge in Odessa.

He retired in 2010 as a District Judge in Brazoria County.

“I was invited I think by the Chamber back in the late 80’s to speak before the original jackrabbit statue in downtown Odessa about the books,” May wrote.
