Police: Suspected drunk driver fled with 8-year-old passenger

An Odessa man is in the Ector County jail after police said he repeatedly avoided their efforts to pull him over Saturday night by driving at a high rate of speed with an 8-year-old passenger.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, an officer first tried to pull Omar Venegas over in the 500 block of East 87th Street, but Venegas cut through a business at a high rate of speed. When a second officer tried to pull him over, Venegas evaded him, crossed U.S. 385 at a high rate of speed and continued speeding on East 86th Street.

Officers found Venegas’ Dodge Ram in a parking lot in the 8500 block of U.S. 385 with Venegas and an 8-year-old boy inside, the report stated.

According to the report, Venegas blew a 0.157 and 0.156 on a breathalyzer and he didn’t have a valid driver’s license or vehicle insurance.

Venegas was arrested on suspicion of evading in a motor vehicle, endangering a child, driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and driving while intoxicated without insurance.

The 25-year-old was also arrested on an assault warrant issued in December when his mother told police he pushed her so hard she fell to the ground and hit her head, causing her to become disoriented and dizzy, a second report indicated.

In addition, Venegas was arrested on three failure to appear in court warrants issued in a 2019 DWI with child case, a 2020 evading arrest case and a 2020 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon case.

Venegas remained in the Ector County jail Monday on surety bonds totaling $110,500.
