Odessan facing assault, multiple drug counts

A 30-year-old Odessa man was arrested Thursday night on multiple assault and drug charges after his girlfriend called authorities to report he’d fired his gun multiple times outside their apartment.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, a 28-year-old woman called 911 to report she was being held hostage by a man with a gun. Prior to officers’ arrival, she was able to get away and officers found her down the street.

The woman told authorities Wesley Sims left their Dixie Boulevard apartment, went behind the car she was sitting in, fired his weapon multiple times and then went back inside, the report stated.

She also told police that two days prior Sims had choked her multiple times, almost to the point where she was unconscious, the report stated.

Officers noticed the woman had bruises on her arms and red marks on her neck. They also found four 9mm shell casings near the car she’d been sitting in, the report stated.

While searching the car and the couple’s apartment, they found 32.5 grams of cocaine, 12 ounces of marijuana, nearly 400 Xanax pills, 156 grams of THC and a 9 mm handgun, according to the report.

Sims was arrested on suspicion of assault impeding breathing, unlawful carrying of a weapon with a previous felony conviction, discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities, three counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of marijuana.

He remained in the Ector County jail Friday night on surety bonds totaling $103,500.
