Odessan arrested in brutal attack

A 22-year-old Odessa man was arrested on a warrant early Thursday morning, two weeks after his girlfriend told authorities he gave her two black eyes and sliced her face open.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers were summoned to Medical Center Hospital on March 4 about an assault victim. When they arrived, a 21-year-old woman and her boyfriend, Mitchell Lionel Cheneau Jr., both told officers she blackened her eyes and cut open her face during a fall, but would provide no other details.

While officers were still investigating, Cheneau left the hospital and officers decided to go to his home on Wilson Street to follow up, the report stated.

While at the house, officers found fresh stab marks on a wall, a bloody drawer and a bloody knife, the report stated.

Cheneau could not explain what had happened and when they went to speak with his girlfriend again, she couldn’t speak because she’d been intubated, according to the report.

When the woman was extubated a week later, she told officers Wright attacked her because he believed she’d cheated on him and she had “talked back” to him, the report stated. She said Cheneau kicked down the bathroom door and cut her face after she’d locked herself inside to get away from him.

She said the broken nose she also had was inflicted during an earlier incident, the report stated.

Cheneau was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held in the Ector County jail on a $50,000 surety bond.
