Odessa students to take part in national civics bee

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation will host the National Civics Bee Texas State Finals from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

Three Odessa students will be participating — Elijah Munoz, from St. John’s Episcopal School, Alina Ahmad, from Harmony Science Academy, and Vasty Urias from Advinita Private School.

Qualifying middle schoolers will compete in a live civics quiz followed by a public speaking round in front of a panel of judges. Along with Odessa, contestants include students from Pearland, Brownsville, and Fort Bend school districts who have won their local Civics Bee competitions.

Recent data released by the Department of Education found that 79% of 8th graders are not proficient in civics. Through the Civics Bee, we are aiming to reverse this trend in Texas and across America.
