Odessa man Tased, arrested

An Odessa police officer deployed his Taser recently while responding to a family fight and he also ended up having to make a felony arrest.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers received a disturbance call shortly before midnight Jan. 31 from the 400 block of Wabash Avenue. When they arrived, they could hear yelling coming from inside the house and a man screaming for everyone to get out.

When officers arrived, they encountered Rocky Enriquez Gonzales, 38, who became upset with his sister for calling the police, the report stated.

According to the report, Gonzales adopted a “fighting stance” in front of a much smaller officer and when the officer tried to convince him to go outside, “forcefully” walked past him, ignored his commands and fell onto a couch. When the officer tried to detain him, Gonzales urged the other people in the home to shoot the officer, the report stated.

Gonzales got off the couch and moved deeper into the house and the officer Tased him, the report stated. Gonzales then kicked the officer in the leg and knee and tried to grab the Taser off the floor, but was unsuccessful.

Gonzales was arrested on suspicion of the misdemeanor crime of simple assault/family violence and the third-degree felony charge of assault on a public servant. He was released from the Ector County jail Feb. 1 after posting a $20,000 surety bond.
