Students and staff at Crockett Middle School were recognized for their artistic prowess in the National Fossil Day Art Contest.
The event at Crockett was held in the school gym with more than 200 students in attendance.
Other winners throughout Ector County ISD were recognized Tuesday as well.
The theme this year is “Prehistoric Life from our National Parks and Monuments.”
“Winners were selected on categories based on age and grade level. We have winners of gold, silver, bronze and honorable mentions from lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, high school and get this, also staff,” Innovation Instructional Specialist Mary Fulton said.
Seventh grader Alexa Rangel got first place; second place was seventh grader Jaime Garcia; third place was Kyhara Trejo, seventh grade; and honorable mentions were Jordan Madrid and Jorge Lozoya.
Assistant Principal Priscilla Hernandez won second place at the district level.
The district student winner was Lyzandra Casarez, a junior at George H.W. Bush New Tech Odessa, and the District Staff Winner and third place in the National Fossil Day Art Contest was Melissa Hernandez, a kindergarten bilingual teacher at Burleson Elementary.
Fulton said the National Park System wants to create a website displaying work from students who showed the theme of “Prehistoric Life from our National Parks and Monuments.”
Fulton said they will send it out in January and make sure the district is OK with the information that will be shared.
Hernandez said she was excited about how the students did and said it is a collaboration of art and science.
Hernandez said she drew an oil-pastel piece the night before it was due.

Lower Elementary: First place: Auden Muniz, San Jacinto Elementary, third grade; second: Annabella Davis, Burnet Elementary.
Upper Elementary: First place: Xitlaly Aguirre Hernandez, Cavazos, fourth grade; second: Scarlett Marie Carillo-Calderon, Gonzales, fifth grade; third: Sophie Shipman, Burleson Elementary, fifth grade; honorable mention: Abel Jimerson, Gonzales, fifth grade; honorable mention: Adriel Ortega Jr., Cameron, fourth grade.
ECISD staff: Melissa Hernandez, a kindergarten bilingual teacher at Burleson Elementary; Priscilla Hernandez, seventh grade art teacher at Crockett Middle School; Natalie Baeza, fifth grade teacher at Gonzales Elementary; honorable mention, Vanessa Brower, gifted and talented teacher at LBJ Elementary.
