MIDLAND Professional development is paramount in helping staff grow and develop in their careers, and this week many Midland ISD educators are taking part in the opportunity to learn more about effective teaching practices.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Abell-Hanger Foundation, nearly 200 teachers, instructional coaches, assistant principals and principals are participating in seminars led by Teach Like a Champion, a news release said.

Teach Like a Champion is an organization that actively studies successful teachers and shares their practices with other educators with the goal of enhancing effectiveness in the classroom.

“Teaching children isn’t easy, and the best practices around what’s effective are constantly evolving,” said Jessie Garcia, Executive Director of Talent Acquisition and Development, in the release. “So it’s imperative that our educators learn about new approaches and get a chance to take their newly acquired knowledge to their campus to support others. It’s how our teachers get better and how we improve as a district.”

Promoting professional growth that yields high-impact teachers not only improves student outcomes, but increases retention.

“MISD is a place where teachers can thrive, and professional development opportunities like these Teach Like a Champion workshops are critical in helping strengthen their skills,” Garcia said.

The daylong Teach Like a Champion workshops began Thursday and continues Saturday, with one additional session planned for March.
