Man charged with swinging machete at family members

A 49-year-old man was arrested after he reportedly cut his hand and his wife’s ear with a two-foot machete.
Robert Edwards was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (family violence), a second-degree felony.
The assault happened at 1:35 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Hudson Avenue, an Odessa Police Department affidavit detailed.
Edwards reportedly had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. His eyes reportedly appeared blood shot and glassy. He was also slurring his words.
Edwards’ wife stated a fight started between Edwards and her oldest son in the kitchen, the affidavit detailed. The wife attempted to stop the fight and that’s when Edwards pulled out a two-foot machete and tried to strike her son.
Edwards was reportedly being reckless and under the influence of alcohol. Edwards reportedly struck himself in the left hand and struck his wife in the right ear which caused minor cuts.
Edwards confirmed his wife’s story and stated he was defending his property, the affidavit stated.
Edwards was arrested, charged and transported to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center. He has one bond totaling $50,000 and was still in custody as of Monday afternoon, jail records show.
