Man charged with punching girlfriend in face

An Odessa Police Department probable cause affidavit detailed a 38-year-old man was arrested after he punched his girlfriend in the face.

Johnny Ray Silvas was charged with continuous violence against the family, a third-degree felony, and evading arrest or detention on foot, a class A misdemeanor.

Officers were dispatched at 2:40 a.m. Dec. 18 to the parking lot of Flair Taverna located at 4555 E. University Boulevard, the affidavit stated. OPD was attempting to locate a man wearing a blue shirt and black jeans who evaded officers on foot.

When officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with the victim, identified as Crystal Chavez, who stated her boyfriend, Silvas, had punched her in the mouth and took some of her property. Officers saw Chavez bleeding from her mouth and she had a cut on the right side of her upper lip.

Officers at the scene stated the man wearing a blue shirt and black jeans had evaded them on foot and was traveling north through the parking lot while they were attempting to detain him to investigate the assault, the affidavit stated.

A short while later, officers found a man wearing a blue shirt and black jean identified as Silvas in the 2700 block of Fair Palms Place, the affidavit detailed. Officers were still actively attempting to locate Silvas when they located him at this address.

Police records check was ran on Silvas, which showed having a previous assault family violence arrest with the victim being Chavez on Oct. 18 as well as being a suspect for an assault family violence charge with the victim being Chavez on March 18.

Silvas was arrested and booked into the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on Dec. 18, jail records show. He has two bonds totaling $26,500 and was still in custody as of Monday afternoon.
