Man arrested for hitting relative in head with shovel

A 57-year-old Odessa man was arrested Friday after admitting he hit a relative in the head with a shovel.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, officers received a 911 call about a disturbance on Gulf Avenue around 9 p.m. Friday and when they arrived they found a 38-year-old man bleeding from his left ear, which had been cut.

Although the injured man declined to say how he’d been hurt, Perfecto Mendoza confessed to hitting him with a square head shovel, the report stated.

Mendoza was booked into the Ector County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/family violence, a Class 1 felony punishable by a prison sentence of five years to life. He was released Sunday after posting a $50,000 surety bond.
