Hearing set in alleged sexual assault

A man who reportedly sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl from his church multiple times will face a pre-trial hearing at 10 a.m. today.

The hearing will take place at the Ector County Courthouse, 300 N. Grant Ave., in the 358th District Court, presided over by Judge Stacy Trotter. Franklin McCallum is listed as the attorney of the defendant, 36-year-old Axel Ramirez-Nunez.

Police first charged Nunez last September after the mother of the victim told the Odessa Police Department her daughter was having a sexual relationship with Ramirez-Nunez, the probable cause affidavit stated.

The mother reportedly told police her family had befriended the Nunez family at church, eventually leading to a relationship between Nunez and the victim, who told her mother she had had sex with Nunez on three occasions, the report detailed.

Police interviewed the victim, who told officers she had developed a relationship with Nunez at church and she had fallen in love with him, identifying Nunez as her boyfriend, the release said, and they had been communicating through text and Facebook messages throughout their relationship.

The victim told officers the location of one of the motels they had sex in, Villa West Inn, 300 W. Pool Road, the release said. Officers contacted the hotel and confirmed Nunez had rented a room at the motel, and found his address registered at the motel, where he was then apprehended and charged.

Nunez will face two charges in court: sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony, and aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony.

Court records show Nunez has a trial date set for 9 a.m. on Feb. 12.
