ALPINE Sul Ross State University’s student-run newspaper, The Skyline, won two awards at the spring convention of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association last week in Fort Worth.
Editor Brooke Manuel, a senior from Midland majoring in English, won first place in General News Division IV for her report “Anxious parents, students return to school in wake of Uvalde shooting.”
Kris Porter, who graduated in December, won third place in Cartoon Strip/Panel in Divisions III and IV for “Gender Neutral Homecoming.”
Advisor Sidney Balman, Jr. presented a workshop at the conference called, “From War Correspondent to Novelist: The Bridge Between Journalism and Fiction.”
Balman, a Pulitzer Prize nominee, covered wars in the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, and later traveled with U.S. presidents and secretaries of state on overseas diplomatic missions. He worked in communications before becoming a novelist living in Alpine. He serves as the Writer in Residence at SRSU, and teaches journalism, creative writing and communications courses.
With the original 1909 meeting at Baylor University, the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association became the oldest collegiate press association in the nation and has grown into one of the largest in the country.
First published in 1923, The Skyline began as a weekly school newspaper until the late 2000’s when the publication transitioned to a biweekly magazine during the fall and spring semesters. Now, The Skyline is printed monthly during the first week of each month. It is distributed throughout campus and copies are given to local businesses as well.
