Friday Night Lights star in jail

Former Permian High School running back James “Boobie” Miles, who was made famous in H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger’s “Friday Night Lights” book, is in the Ector County Jail accused of failing to register as a sex offender.

Court records detail Miles was sentenced to five years in prison in January 2020 after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault. Miles, 51, had been indicted in August 2015 in connection with a June 1999 assault.

Court records indicate he was given credit for three years’ time served. It’s not clear when he was released from prison, but one of the terms of his plea agreement was that he had to register as a sex offender upon his release.

Miles was prominently featured in Bissinger’s book about the Panthers’ 1988 season, a book that made the New York Times’ best-seller list and was later made into a movie. Miles played at Ranger College the following year. He has also served time in prison for violating probation related to an aggravated assault charge.
