Forest Service details parts of West Texas affected by drying trend

SAN ANGELO Texas A&M Forest Service and local fire departments are advising the public to be aware of the continued drying conditions in the western Trans Pecos Region that can contribute to rapidly growing wildfires, a press release detailed.

While most of the State is seeing a “green up” of vegetation, parts of the Trans Pecos Region are experiencing a drying trend of the grasses, brush and other vegetation within the region as we move into pre-monsoon conditions for the area.

These conditions can produce afternoon thunderstorms with little to no rain; produce dry lightning and downburst winds. These weather conditions are forecasted to be in place Friday.

The public is encouraged to be careful of their outdoors activities such as barbequing, debris burning and use of campfires. Please follow any Burn Bans there are in place, any activity that can cause a spark or ember may have the potential to cause a wildfire.

“Dry conditions and the abundance of grass, brush and other groundcover can turn a spark into a wildfire,” Shane Crimm, Texas A&M Forest Service West Branch Chief, stated in a press release.
