Broadway in the Basin brings live, quality theater to West Texas and an upcoming show is certainly a popular favorite.

“The Sound of Music” is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. May 30 at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center as a part of Cristiani’s Jewelers 2017-1018 Broadway in the Basin series.

This new production is currently on tour across North America with the spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family. The show has enjoyed Tony, Grammy and Academy Award wins and features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, suggested by “The Trapp Family Singers” by Maria Augusta Trapp.

“The Sound of Music” was the first live television production of a musical in more than 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013 and was seen by more than 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.

The touring production features:

Jill-Christine Wiley as Maria Rainer. Wiley, via the soundofmusic.com site, said she feels delighted to share this beautiful story. A Lancaster, Penn., native, she has performed regionally and nationally, seen most recently as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She has also performed in “Carousel,” Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and in “The Fantasticks.”

Mike McClean plays Captain Georg Von Trapp and has experience with national tours. He’s been in “Guys and Dolls,” “Saturday Night Fever,” and “Life Could be a Dream.”

Chad P. Campbell as Rolf Gruber. This is Campbell’s national tour debut but he is no stranger to regional theater and has performed in “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “A Christmas Carol” and “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Lauren Kidwell is the Mlther Abbess and said via the website that she is very excited to join “The Sound of Music!” She has a masters in musical theater from Boston Conservatory. She’s been in “Ragtime,” “My Heart in a Suitcase” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
