The University of Texas of the Permian Basin has scheduled a Topping Out ceremony, placement of the final steel beam atop the UTPB Engineering Building, at 10 a.m. Monday in the North West corner of the parking lot at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center, 1310 N. FM1788, Midland.

“Topping Out” is a major structural milestone in the construction of significant buildings. A tree attached to a beam represents one of the construction industry’s oldest traditions brought from Europe to the United States.

Ironworkers have continued the topping out event, because their skills make them the first to reach the pinnacle of a structure.

For the UTPB Engineering Building, a rigging beam has been designated for the Topping Out Ceremony. Following the ceremony it will be flown into place.

The public is invited to invited to commemorate the event by personally signing the beam and then, if weather permits, witnessing the ironworkers’ process to hoist it into place.

There will be an opportunity to tour the construction area following the ceremony.

Individuals who wish to participate in this tour should not wear high heels or open-toed shoes.
