Dropout recovery events set

During the next couple of weeks, Ector County ISD and other organizations will be hosting a series of events to recover students who decided to drop out of school.

The next event is set for 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the ECISD Community Outreach Center, 301 E. Clements St., followed by 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Odessa College Saulsbury Campus Center foyer.

During each of these times, a team of volunteers will be making home visits to speak with students who have dropped out, encouraging them to go to the sites listed to learn about ways they can return to school and complete their high school education, a news release said.

Along with ECISD, the organizations taking part are Odessa College GED program, Ector Acceleration Academies, Richard Milburn Academy and Catholic Charities Corey Learning Center GED program.

During his media call Wednesday, Muri said the students being sought are typically between the ages of 16 and 21.

“We would like to bring those students back in and ensure that they earn a high school diploma or a GED so that opportunities during their life for work or for additional postsecondary experiences can be more available to those students,” Muri said.

“If you are aware of someone that has made a decision over the last several years to drop out of school and they’re interested in coming back, we want to know who they are so we can enroll them in one of a variety of different programs within our community that are targeted very specifically on kids that have made a decision to drop out,” he added.

They do not have to be former ECISD students and Muri said they are not certain about the number of students that are out there.

“We know the number of ECISD students that have made different decisions, but not the number of young adults that live in the other places,” he said.

“… Some may have finished through home schooling or private. We do recognize that we have kids in our community that have not received their high school diploma or GED,” Muri added.

Also, if you yourself are interested, Muri said, the district wants to set you up with an opportunity obtain your GED or diploma. He suggested visiting the ECISD website for more information at https://www.ectorcountyisd.org/

On a separate topic, Muri reminded parents of the first early release day Sept. 14. Students will arrive at school at their regular time, but they will be released around the noon hour, he said.

You can visit the ECISD website, or your school’s website to see specific release times, Muri added.

“The reasons that we do these is so that the teachers and administrators can go to school. Our opportunity to improve as an organization is really based upon these opportunities to grow and learn and to be developed ourselves,” he said.
