Broadband, device support available

The federal government has announced a program for low-income families in Ector County regarding devices and broadband.

“The Emergency Broadband Benefit program provides a couple of opportunities for eligible families,” Ector County ISD Superintendent Scott Muri said during his media call Wednesday.

“First, it would provide up to a $50 discount per month on high-speed broadband internet access in the home. The second thing would provide up to a $100 discount for the purchase of a laptop computer or other mobile computing device for students.”

The discount of up to $100 is for a one-time purchase of a laptop or other computing device for an ECISD student, Muri said.

Muri said the program is funded by the Federal Communications Commission.

“They’re targeting our low-income families, not only in Ector County but across the country with this program. In addition to that, ECISD is doing some work on our own. As an example, our partnership with SpaceX is an opportunity for families that literally have no or very few options regardless of their economic status to bring high speed broadband into their home. We do have a variety of programs in place to support any type of family and their access to broadband,” he added.

He noted that more information is available on the ECISD website.
