DPS investigating two deadly weekend wrecks

Two men were killed over the weekend in separate crashes on Permian Basin roads.

According to DPS, Joel Oscar Limonta-Alvarez, 47, of Irving was traveling north on State Highway 349 Saturday morning when his tractor-trailer’s front left tire blew out, causing him to veer across the southbound lane and hit a utility pole.

Limonta-Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was 19 miles south of Midland. It’s unknown if he was wearing a seat belt.

DPS also responded to a fatal crash around 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to DPS, Eduardo Lopez-Escarcega, 32, of Chihuahua, Mexico was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee south on State Highway 18 when he veered into the northbound lanes six miles north of Monahans and struck a tractor-trailer.

Lopez-Escarcega, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other driver, a 48-year-old man from Albuquerque, N.M., was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.
