Detention officer loses job, facing felony sex charge

An Ector County grand jury has indicted a former Ector County detention officer accused of engaging in a sex act with a female inmate in July.

According to Ector County District Court records and Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis, Jeremy Berry, 30, was fired on July 25 after a Texas Rangers investigation revealed he placed his penis in the mouth of the woman on July 16.

Berry was indicted Monday on one count of violation of the civil rights of a person in custody/sexual and turned himself in Thursday.

Berry, who had worked for the sheriff’s department for five years, was released from the Ector County jail after posting a $150,000 surety bond.

The crime is a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.
