Car show benefits schoolchildren

County advertises for tire disposal bids

Buying childrens’ school supplies and in other ways helping students, the third annual Low Riders Against Bullying Car Show will be held Aug. 19-20 in the Ector County Courthouse parking lot.

Obtaining county commissioners’ unanimous approval Tuesday morning, car show representative Al Lara of Odessa said the exhibition will also enable the scheduling of special speakers at local schools.

“It’s to bring people together, have good days and love one another,” Lara said, noting that the show is sponsored by Brown Creations Car Club and the Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

In other business, County Environmental Enforcement Director Rickey George’s request was OK’d to advertise for bids to dispose of discarded tires in the rural areas, which George had said previously was one of his department’s biggest challenges.

The court set Aug. 1 to start the process of writing the county budget for fiscal 2022-23 that will be concluded just before the new fiscal year opens Oct. 1.

The commissioners also:

>> Enacted a proclamation declaring May 15-21 National Police Week and May 15 Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

>> Named Sheriff’s Detective Heidi Zavala to replace former Detective Jodi Alvarado on the board of the Ector County Sexual Assault Response Team.

>> Approved an $83,585 budget amendment to the sales tax fund to buy motor vehicle equipment for the highways and streets department..

>> OK’d a budget amendment and accepted a $5,000 donation to the library to buy supplies.

>> Approved Coliseum Manager Aaron Martin’s request for $955 for educational travel.

>> OK’d purchasing agent Lucy Soto’s proposal for a budget increase to buy paper towels and bathroom tissue, which Soto said before the brief 10 a.m. meeting at the county administration building at 1010 E. Eighth St. have become much more expensive with paper towels now costing an additional $5 per case and bathroom tissue $3 more per case.
