Broadway in the Basin announces 2023 lineup

The Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center, 1310 N. FM 1788, Midland.

Broadway in the Basin returns for its 11th season in January 2023 at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center.

The schedule features five shows beginning with “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Jan. 8, followed by “My Fair Lady” on Feb. 15. The season will continue with “Hairspray” on March 6 with “Anastasia” on Apr. 2. The season will conclude with “Cats” on May 4.

All shows start at 7:30 p.m.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season,” Wagner Noel General Manager Stephanie Rivas said. “The last couple of years, coming through COVID, it was a little difficult in rescheduling shows and making sure we were able to get programming back onto our stage, so we’re very excited to have a full season back on stage. This year, we have five shows for our ‘22-‘23 season, and we’re really excited about the shows that we’re able to bring. I feel like it’s a strong variety of Broadway programming.”

Last season of Broadway in the Basin featured numerous shows that had been rescheduled from 2020 due to the pandemic.

A few additional performances might be added to the calendar this year.

“Throughout the year, we might do one or two add-on performances through the same presenter so we’re able to provide some programming outside of our Broadway season but our Broadway season is typically five to six shows,” Rivas said.

Rivas feels good about the upcoming season having enough shows that will appeal to as many people as possible.

“We are a venue that really strives to bring a variety of programming to our patrons,” Rivas said. “As far as our Broadway is concerned, our focus is always to bring a variety of shows that will be of interests to different ages and ranges through Broadway programming. This one is a lot of fun. We have some programs that are very traditional programs such as ‘My Fair Lady’ or ‘Cats’ and then we have some beautiful, family programming like ‘Anastasia,’ and ‘Hairspray’ is a lot of fun to. ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is also very traditional. … We know that there are shows that are not for everyone, but we also hope that they will find a good selection of shows that they’re interested in as they look at the full season.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is an iconic musical with a worldwide fan base. In honor of its 50th anniversary, a mesmerizing new production comes to North America.

Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader and award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie, this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and garnered plenty of accolades.

Featuring award-winning music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, “Jesus Christ Superstar” is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. The well-known production features the score “I don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethesmane” and “Superstar.”

“My Fair Lady” tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young cockney flower seller and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who agrees to a wager that he can make her presentable in high society.

Broadway’s Tony Award-winning musical “Hairspray” returns on tour and follows the character 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad in 1960s Baltimore as she sets out to dance her way onto TV’s most popular show. The musical features the beloved score of hit songs including “Welcome to the 60s,” “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”

Inspired by the films, the romantic and adventure-filled new musical “Anastasia” will take the stage at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center.

From Tony Award-winning creators of the Broadway classic “Ragtime,” the show goes back in time from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s as a young woman named Anastasia, with the help of a con man and ex-officer, sets out to discover the mystery of her past while being pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer who’s determined to silence her.

Another musical by Webber, “Cats” will end the 2023 season. The musical, which has won seven Tony Awards, tells the story of one night when a tribe of cats gather for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which one will be reborn.

New subscriptions for the upcoming Broadway in the Basin season are now available.

Tickets for individual shows go on sale Nov. 18.

“We’re encouraging families to look at being a Broadway subscriber,” Rivas said. “A couple of things just in general, we don’t do a full-year long subscription here at the Wagner Noel. As most people know, they can just buy shows as they come on sale. Broadway is one of those things that we do sell as a season and as a Broadway subscriber, you get the option to have the same great seats that we help you choose for all five of the shows. Another advantage is that we will do some programming outside of our Broadway schedule that our subscribers get the first pick of the tickets to those shows. Throughout the year, we do some additional things that are tailored to our Broadway subscribers. We’ve had preshow receptions and dinners. We’re hoping to bring some of that back to our Broadway subscribers.”
