BRASWELL: Why Christmas?

By Dr. Jimmy Braswell

Chaplain, Home Hospice of Odessa

Every year after Thanksgiving we begin dragging out the same old Christmas lights and decorations; we write Christmas cards to the same collection of friends and family; we again, sometimes for 24 hours straight, watch the same old Christmas movies; we sing the traditional Christmas songs and even new entertainers do variations of the old Christmas carols.

And then, on Christmas Day, we have a variety of Christmas plays depicting the birth of Christ – Why do we continue to do it all? – The presents, the food, the traveling, the parties? – For one major reason – HIM.

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The Birth of the Savior of mankind is still the most significant event in the history of the world. I won’t be surprised if when we finally arrive together in the Kingdom of God – we still all celebrate CHRISTMAS – remembering and loving the remembering.

As one composer of my favorite Christmas cantata wrote – “The world spins on the axis of Christmas”. I don’t see it ever stopping, even through the most difficult days and world-shaking events. Glory to God on High. Rejoice for the Savior is Born.
