BRASWELL: Family time

By Dr. Jimmy Braswell

Chaplain, Home Hospice of Odessa

Appropriately during the months of May and June and into July, we remember our families, family life and country.

We are reminded after that “family is important” and so it is. Whether a family is very close or not, family is still a big part of our whole life. Our mother’s on Mother’s Day are remembered for the Hope they have given us; Memorial Day to remember those who have given their lives for our greater family – our country; Father’s Day to remember fathers and their instilling us with strong will; and even into July to remember on the 4th our forefathers and the establishment of our nation.

Family is where the “water hits the wheel” in developing our character and giving us opportunity to develop the tools of social interactions: manners, patience, tolerance, and commitment in spite of circumstances. It is said, “Home is where you go and they have to take you in.” Not always practically true, but the dynamics of grace, mercy, and love are developed and practiced there. There, in family, we learn to willfully be involved, and in hope, expect the best.

Sometimes there are surprises. I had a family of friends that I got to know very well. They tried to “fix” me up with their sister. (They, the boys, were homely as they come). I avoided her even though I had never met her, judging her by her brothers only to discover she was “knock dead gorgeous.” Being committed to family and friends has benefits we never dreamed of – God has given you your family and friends – honor them as gifts from God.
