ABILENE West Texas VA Health Care System announced Thursday the signing of a new lease for a state-of-the-art facility that will house the Abilene Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). This new 35,000-plus square foot building, located at 5602 Health Center Drive in Abilene marks a significant upgrade from the current 11,000-square-foot clinic, reflecting their commitment to serving the rapidly growing veteran population in West Texas.
The search for a suitable location has been extensive, lasting more than a year, as we sought a space that could adequately respond to the increasing needs of veterans. This new facility is not only larger, but also significantly enhanced with modern facilities and services that were not available at the current location, a news release said.
“Our team has been working tirelessly to secure a location that can provide our Veterans with the comprehensive care they deserve,” Executive Medical Center Director Keith Bass said in a news release. “The new Abilene CBOC is a major step forward in expanding our service capabilities. It will be equipped to offer more specialty care services, advanced radiology, and other vital support services.”

The existing structure, having previously been a medical building, will greatly shorten the time needed to make needed upgrades and refurbishments. The new clinic’s design and refurbishment plans are being developed in collaboration with the lessor and a team of expert planners and architects. Rehabilitation of the existing structure is expected to commence soon, with the process estimated to take approximately 18 months. The anticipated opening of the clinic is in early 2026.
“We are planning a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the rehab construction, which will be an excellent opportunity for the community to join us in celebrating this significant milestone,” said Bass.
The introduction of the new Abilene CBOC is part of WTVAHCS’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare accessibility for veterans. This new facility will allow us to offer expanded health care options and benefits, including:
- Specialty Care Services: More comprehensive care through various specialties that address the specific needs of veterans.
- Advanced Radiology: On-site advanced imaging capabilities to aid in the timely and accurate diagnosis of health conditions.
- Enhanced Support Services: Increased access to services such as mental health counseling, physical therapy, and more.
This expansion is in direct response to the growing demand for veteran services in the region and aligns with West Texas VA’s mission to provide exceptional care that improves the health and well-being of veterans.
