Thunderstorms heading for Midland-Odessa

Odessa residents should be gearing up for heavy rainfall and damaging winds this afternoon into Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’re looking at showers and thunderstorms firing up across West Texas here within the next hour or two. We’ll see an increase in showers and storms all the way up into the Permian Basin by late this afternoon, early this evening,” Meteorologist Scott Kleebauer said shortly before 2 p.m. Friday.

The storms will carry on through the night into 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Kleebauer said.

“There will be locally heavy rainfall with these (storms) as well, especially in the very beginning. A brief period of severe weather is possible. The main concerns will be damaging winds and some hail is possible, but hail is probably one of the lower concerns for this setup,” he said. “The concerns are definitely damaging winds, heavy rainfall and possible flooding.”

On Sunday afternoon, Kleebauer said we’ll see another disturbance coming in from Mexico that’ll carry through Monday.

“There’s some questions about the overall impact for that one, but it does look like there could be some locally heavy rainfall somewhere, especially across West Texas, the Big Bend area maybe up towards the I-20 corridor,” he said.

The forecast after that becomes “muddled,” Kleebauer said.

“We’ll see how the second storm plays out. If it lingers around the state of Texas then obviously we could have isolated to scattered showers and storms pretty much in the forecast every single day. But it’s not going to be as widespread of an impact compared to what’s going to happen late this afternoon this evening and potentially even Monday,” he said.

Morning lows over the next few days will be in the mid to high 50s, Kleebauer said. Saturday’s high will reach 71 degrees and it’ll be in the mid to high 70s Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures for this time of year are normally in the mid to upper 80s, he said.
