2 fires in two days

Firefighters responded to two fires in two days in the Odessa area and while there was significant damage caused in both, there were no injuries reported.

Odessa Fire Rescue Chief John Alvarez said two dozen firefighters from the West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department and OFR received a call from the 8200 block of West Mars around 9 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, a pickup truck underneath a carport was fully engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread to a wooden structure underneath the carport and a nearby shop.

Firefighters were able to save a classic El Camino, Corvette Stingray and another pickup truck, but the property damage was significant, Alvarez said.

The cause of the fire is unknown, he said.

On Monday, OFR crews had to evacuate several apartments at the Parkway Oaks Apartments, 1465 John Ben Shepherd Parkway, around 7:30 a.m. after a fire erupted in one first-story apartment, said OFR Battalion Chief Quentin Dobmeier.

Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire within minutes and prevent it from extending into any of the surrounding apartments, he said.

The apartment resident escaped from the apartment prior to the firefighters’ arrival and crews were able to rescue her dog, which had found a safe place to hide, Dobmeier said.

The resident lost roughly 90 percent of her belongings in the fire, the cause of which remains under investigation, he said.
