New book on Larry McMurtry reflects on life, legacy of author through Texas writers

AUSTIN The new book, Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry, will be released on September 5 and available everywhere books are sold, a Friday press release detailed.

Featuring nearly forty contributors, including literary and film legends like Lawrence Wright, Elizabeth Crook, Stephen Graham Jones, and Diana Ossana, Pastures of the Empty Page offers an intimate view of Larry McMurtry, America’s preeminent western novelist, through the eyes of a pantheon of writers he helped shape through his work over the course of his unparalleled literary life.

Publishers Weekly says, “McMurtry’s fans will want to track this down,” and Texas Monthly calls the collection, “a moving tribute.”

Editor George Getschow (Flower Mound) brought together McMurtry’s friends, collaborators, and other creators influenced by the Texas man of letters, to contribute essays that show McMurtry as a trustworthy friend and supportive mentor, despite a curmudgeonly public persona.

Getschow, now the director of the Archer City Writers Workshop—where McMurtry spent much of the end of his life teaching and presiding over his sprawling bookstore, Booked Up—has several events planned across Texas to celebrate the book as well as McMurtry’s life. Events will include essay contributors and other special guests.
