UTPB’s Shepperd Leadership Institute hosts Distinguished Lecture Series featuring novelist Michael Chabon

The University of Texas Permian Basin’s Shepperd Leadership Institute has teamed up with Odessa Arts for the next Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS). Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon is the featured lecturer.

The DLS will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center. The event is free to the community, thanks to the generosity of the Shepperd Inner Circle donors, a news release said.

Executive Director of Odessa Arts, Randy Ham will interview Chabon about his career and his novel: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay follows the lives of two cousins, Czech artist Joe Kavalier and Brooklyn-born writer Sammy Clay, before, during, and after World War II. The novel was selected by the American Library Association as one of the Notable Books of 2000 and won the New York Society Library Prize for Fiction, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, the Commonwealth Club Gold Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize.

In 2020, the New York Public Library voted The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years.

“The Shepperd Leadership Institute is thrilled to welcome Michael Chabon to West Texas for the next Distinguished Lecture Series,” Savannah Woodward, director of special events at the Shepperd Leadership Institute, said in the release. “This DLS is unique thanks to our collaboration with Odessa Arts. In lieu of a traditional lecture, Ham will interview Chabon followed by an engaging Q&A session with the audience. We are certain this event will be entertaining and thought provoking; we hope the community makes plans to join us.”
