28th Annual Youth Fishing Day planned at Grindstone Lake

Local organizations work together to provide a fun and educational day

RUIDOSO, N.M. The 28th Annual Youth Fishing Day will be held June 3 at Grindstone Lake near Ruidoso a U.S. Forest Service press release detailed. This free event is open to children ages 12 and under.

The event is hosted by Lincoln National Forest, the Village of Ruidoso, New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Mescalero Fish Hatchery and Trout Unlimited.

“This is a special day for the kids and a fun way to learn about fishing,” said Erica Luna, acting Lincoln National Forest Director, in the release. She added that the goal of the event is to increase awareness of recreational fishing and to encourage youth to learn about natural resource stewardship.

Event activities will begin at 8 a.m., with a presentation by New Mexico Game & Fish. The day will include a variety of fun activities, including fly-fishing demonstrations, archery activities, disc golf, canoe rides, and a special appearance by Smokey Bear.

Local merchants throughout Lincoln County have donated prizes for the event, and fishing poles and bait will also be available for youth if needed.

The Youth Fishing Day is part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which is observed June 1-10. June 3 is also New Mexico’s Free Fishing Day.
