As the 2021 season came to a close, Greg Estrada learned how important leadership is for a team to achieve favorable results. He got firsthand experience with the Odessa High baseball team and he is looking forward to helping the Bronchos turn things around and get back into the postseason in 2022. “Leadership is a big part in success,” Estrada said. “You need leadership in order to be successful and do the things you want to do and the goals you want to achieve.” The Bronchos are hoping to get more consistency this season, as they saw things take a negative turn toward the end of last year. Odessa High finished with 15-14 overall record, going 6-12 in District 2-6A play and missing out on the state playoffs. Although their 2022 season hasn’t officially begun, Estrada has already seen a difference in how his team is approaching its preparation. The senior said he and his teammates put in a lot of voluntary work over the offseason to stay in shape before their scrimmages even took place. The Bronchos got out to a strong start to the season in 2021 before losing steam as district play wound down. Odessa High baseball coach Josh Hulin knows his team will have to keep its momentum high as its campaign comes to a close if it wants to make some noise. “We just got to play better down the stretch, we played poorly when it mattered the most,” Hulin said. “We won four games in a row right in the middle of the season, we were in a great position, we had a ton of momentum and then we just completely fell flat at the end. “You learn that you’re just not very good when you can’t play good under pressure.” The Bronchos will face a tough task in District 2-6A, but they have a solid combination of returners and newcomers to lean on for energy. They used the early portion of their campaign to scrimmage against various teams from around the area before opening their nondistrict slate. Odessa High is set to start its season against Brenham at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the Liberty Hill Invitational in Liberty Hill. Along with the tournament in Liberty Hill, the team will also play nondistrict contests in tournaments held in Midland and Crowley. Estrada will be playing his first season with the varsity team and he’s ready for the challenges that playing against high level competition will bring. “I feel like we outwork every team,” Estrada said. “We might not be as talented, but we’ll outwork them and get those grinding, good wins.” Hulin is entering his ninth year at the helm of the Odessa High baseball program and he has learned a fair share of lessons on what to expect from teams around the district. A long run in the playoffs was important to the development of many players on the Permian baseball team last season. Most of Permian’s roster consisted of juniors now heading into their final year of high school eligibility, looking to repeat their performances and claim another District 2-6A championship. Xavier Melendez said experience was something the Panthers lacked last year, but it will be a key factor if they want to have success in 2022. “I think it’s going to be a great year, everybody here has put in a lot of work through the whole offseason,” Melendez said. “It shows out on the field.” The Panthers had one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2021, going 23-7 in regular season play and making it to the third round of the Class 6A playoffs where they fell in three games against Southlake Carroll. Permian baseball coach Tate Criswell believes his team is getting stronger because of what each player saw as the campaign moved forward. Despite losing high-impact players like Teo Banks, Criswell believes this year’s squad is ready for the challenges it will face. “Experience is key in whatever you’re doing in life,” Criswell said. “I think we’ve got that now, for the most part. “A lot of the guys that weren’t on the field, in between the lines last year during those games were in the dugout, so they were there.” The head coach added that seeing those big game situations will help as the Panthers are scheduled to face tough competition from District 2-6A. Permian had success against district opponents last year, recording a 13-3 mark in league games and looked stronger in games that had higher stakes. When the Panthers needed to defeat Wolfforth Frenship to claim the district title outright, multiple players stepped up to help secure wins. Peyton Gregory learned how to be a brotherhood through playing in those situations and he wants to pass it down to some of the Panthers’ newcomers. “That’s what we’re trying to teach these younger kids,” Gregory said. “We lost a lot of senior leadership and us seniors this year, we’re really trying to chase that.” To prepare for the road ahead, the Panthers will be facing strong opponents in various nondistrict tournaments and matchups. Some of their most notable showdowns will take place in trips to tournaments in San Marcos and Midland. Criswell and his team are hoping that scheduling those games early will help when District 2-6A play begins. The head coach is expecting a tight competition from other district teams, similar to what the Panthers saw during before their playoff run last year. “It reminds me, kind of like the Big 12 in men’s basketball,” Criswell said. “If you don’t play well on any given day, you’re likely to get beat. “I think from top to bottom, everybody in our district is really good.” The Panthers will officially begin their season against Victoria East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in tournament play in San Marcos.
